Fears Grow For Phil Collins, 74, As He Makes Tragic Announcement After Retiring – ‘I’ve Been Very Sick…’

Fears are growing for the health of the singer Phil Collins, 74, after he gave a sad interview about what led to him retiring.

Collins Is ‘Very Sick’

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I’m not hungry for it anymore,” Collins told MOJO Magazine. “The thing is, I’ve been sick. I mean very sick.”

Collins’ health issues stem from severe nerve damage that he was left with after a spinal injury in 2007. In the years since then, his mobility has slowly deteriorated.

“My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in,” Collins told Daily Mail in 2009. “It comes from years of playing. I can’t even hold the sticks properly without it being painful, I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through.”

By 2021, things had become even worse for Collins.

“I can barely hold a stick with his hand, so there are certain physical things, which get in the way,” Collins said at the time.

The year after that, Collins’ condition had gotten so bad that he was forced to sing sitting down while his son Nic played the drums for his band Genesis’ farewell shows.

Collins Discusses His Health

Back in December, Collins opened up about his health problems in the documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First.

“It’s still kind of sinking in a bit,” Collins admitted. “I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.”

Collins went on to say that he’s been playing the drums since he was 5 years-old. Sadly, this constant movement has “taken its toll on my hands, legs.”

“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,” Collins confessed. “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

Collins Relies On A Cane To Get Around

Nic chimed in to explain that his father had major neck surgery back in 2015. Since then, Collins has had to use a cane to get around, according to his son.

“Musicians, people in bands in general had this thought that they were invincible,” Nic stated. “I think that’s really what it is with my dad is just this kind of sense of you’re a drummer, you’re invincible, you do what you do. But you don’t know it’s gonna take a toll in the long run.”

During his last 2022 show, Collins shocked his fans by revealing that it would be Genesis’ final performance.

“Tonight is a very special night. Of course, we’re playing in London. It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis,” he said during the show. “It’s difficult for us to believe that you still came out to see it. I guess after tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”
