The world was stunned last Wednesday when UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down on the streets of Manhattan at 6:45AM. A massive manhunt ensued for the unknown assassin, who immediately fled the scene.

This manhunt lasted an exhausting five days. Finally, on Monday, police arrested 26 year-old Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. They then charged him with Thompson’s murder. Now, new details about Luigi’s history have come to light.

Luigi’s Family History

Luigi shockingly comes from a wealthy family that is “beloved” in Baltimore, Maryland. The family made a fortune in real estate and has a long history of contributing millions of dollars to health care. Ironically, this is the industry that would later drive Luigi to allegedly commit murder.

Luigi’s late grandfather Nick Mangione Sr. once gave an interview in which he talked about his immigrant success story. Indeed, he truly lived the American dream.

“I didn’t have two nickels to rub together when my father died when I was 11, yet I still became a millionaire,” Nick once told The Baltimore Sun of his Italian immigrant father. “What other country can you do that in? None that I can think of.”

Nick built a series of successfully businesses, developing and owning local resorts and country clubs. He also owned nursing homes and even a radio station. Nick and his wife Mary also donated $1 million to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where all 36 of their grandchildren were born, including Luigi.

The Mangione Family Foundation has additionally made massive donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the St. Joseph Medical Center at the University of Maryland.

Somehow, in this context, Mangione was allegedly upset about the cost of healthcare.

Luigi’s Family Speaks Out

The family continues to be a success to this day. Luigi’s cousin Nino Mangione even serves in Maryland’s House of Delegates. The Mangiones are in shock about Luigi’s alleged crime.

“It’s a shock for all of us,” Luigi’s uncle, Jerry O’Keefe, told The New York Post on Tuesday. “I can’t say any more. The statement summed it up for all of us. We don’t know anything more than what’s been reported in the media.”

This was a reference to the statement the family made hours after Luigi’s arrest.

“We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved,” they said. “We are devastated by this news.”

Luigi’s History

Luigi grew up in a life of privilege. He attended the all-boys Gilman School in Baltimore, which costs $40,000 per year in tuition.

After graduating from this school as valedictorian of his class, Luigi attended the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. Luigi received a Master of Science in engineering with a major in computer and information science, and a Bachelor of Science in engineering, with a major in computer science and a minor in mathematics.

After graduating, Luigi worked as a a data engineer at the car-buying website TrueCar in California. The company said that he hadn’t worked there since 2023, however.

Luigi’s last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was active in the surfing community before a lifelong back injury was worsened by the grueling activity. A friend of Luigi’s told CBS News that he was often social in Hawaii, except for “when he was in severe pain.”

Luigi’s Manifesto

Luigi had reportedly not been in contact with his friends and family for months prior to the murder. Upon his arrest, Luigi was found to have a manifesto on him explaining why he did it. In the manifesto, he wrote that the U.S. has the “most expensive healthcare system in the world” but lamented that the country “ranks #42 in life expectancy.”

“These parasites had it coming,” the manifesto read. “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.”

Luigi has been denied bail and is currently being held in Pennsylvania. He is contesting his extradition to New York.
