Whoopi Goldberg Drops Bomb On ‘The View’ – Reveals She ‘Was Dying’ A Few Years Ago

Whoopi Goldberg shocked her co-hosts and fans alike on Monday’s episode of “The View,” when she claimed that she “was dying” during a major health scare a few years ago.

Goldberg Sounds Off

During a segment in which the women of “The View” discussed whether or not wives should go with their husbands to doctors appointments, Goldberg unsurprisingly steered the conversation to making it all about herself. 

Decider reported that back in 2019, Goldberg had to miss weeks of “The View” when she was hospitalized after being diagnosed with both pneumonia and sepsis. On Monday morning, Goldberg reflected on how her co-hosts handled her situation as it was unfolding four years ago. 

“A series of the ladies, when I got sick a couple of years ago, came to see me in the hospital. And they were sitting like this,” said Goldberg, 67, before showing the audience how her co-hosts stared at her. 

“I know I looked terrible, Whoopi. I am so sorry about that,” Sunny Hostin responded, with Goldberg joking, “They were looking at me like I was a pork chop!” 

Hostin defended herself by talking about how scary Goldberg’s medical situation really was.

“I was one of the first people that showed up, and then I called everybody: ‘Whoopi is really sick. You gotta go see her!’” she recalled.

‘I Was Dying’

“You were in the hospital for a month, and you were gray,” co-host Ana Navarro said, to which Goldberg shockingly replied, “Well, I was dying. That’s part of it.”

“I told you guys, ‘Don’t panic. They’re working to fix it,’” the Oscar-winner added. “I did not do what I was supposed to do. I should have taken better care and recognized when something was wrong. But you can’t panic people, because if you panic the person, they’re not gonna tell you anything.”

Goldberg’s Recovery

After Goldberg recovered from pneumonia back in 2019, she was open about the fact that she nearly died.

“I came very, very close to leaving the Earth. Good news, I didn’t. Thank you for all of your good wishes,” she said in a video that was shared on “The View” at the time.

“Ladies, I cannot wait to see y’all. This has been interesting and I’ll tell you about it when we’re all at the table,” she added. “To everybody, see you soon.”

Doctor Speaks Out About Pneumonia

While pneumonia is typically a very treatable disease, it can also get very serious very quickly 

“Pneumonia is a pretty common disease, and a lot of times when we treat pneumonia in the hospital it’s not that severe,” Dr. John Mafi, MPH, a general internist at UCLA Health, told Healthline.

“What happens with pneumonia is [that] the body interacts with bacteria that sets off an inflammatory systemic response — the whole body gets swollen and inflamed, which is called sepsis,” he continued. “That’s the part that is oftentimes very deadly and that’s one of the complications we worry about.” 

Mafi went on to say that it is the oldest and youngest patients that are “the most susceptible to dying from pneumonia.”

“The good news is that it is oftentimes very treatable and reversible — it’s curable,” he said. “That being said it is getting harder to treat because we are seeing more and more people who are resistant to drugs, which is in part driven by overuse of antibiotics at large. That’s why we tell clinicians to be cautious about overusing antibiotics.”

Goldberg appears to have made a full recovery, and she continues to co-host “The View” to this day. Many of her fans will undoubtedly be shocked to learn that she came so close to death just a few years ago!
