The radically liberal Hollywood star Bette Midler is opening up in a new interview about why she has no intention of becoming a politician despite being very outspoken about her leftwing political views.
Midler Admits She’s ‘Not Smart Enough’
“I’m not smart enough,” Midler, 77, told Variety when asked if she’d ever become a politician. “And the difference between me and the people who actually hold office is that I’m smart enough to know that I’m not smart enough to be in governance, to be in lawmaking.”
“Some of these people, you don’t have any idea why in the name of god they got into politics,” she added. “They’re so lame and they’re so stupid. And they don’t really give a shit about their constituents. They’re mostly there for a cash grab. I really do believe that. I never thought that way when I was a kid.”
Not stopping there, Midler proceeded to complain about the current state of America.
“Oh my god, this country. Oh my god, my country ’tis of thee, I loved it so much,” she said. “But I tell you lately, it makes absolutely no sense that we are being governed by people who are so clueless. I’m sorry. That’s it. I have nothing more to say.”

Midler In Hot Water Over Politics
For someone who is admittedly “not smart enough” to go into politics, Midler certainly talks about it a lot. In December of 2021, Midler found herself in hot water after she posted an offensive tweet in response to Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) opposing President Joe Biden’s progressive Build Back Better Bill that would fund COVID-19 relief and climate change solutions
“What #JoeManchin, who represents a population smaller than Brooklyn, has done to the rest of America, who wants to move forward, not backward, like his state is horrible,” she tweeted. “He sold us out. He wants us all to be just like his state West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out.”
Midler later backtracked, tweeting, “I apologize to the good people of WVA for my last outburst. I’m just seeing red; #JoeManchin and his whole family are a criminal enterprise. Is he really the best WV has to offer its own citizens? Surely, there’s someone there who has the state’s interests at heart, not his own!”

Donald Trump Fires Back
The former President Donald Trump fired back at Midler by calling her a “wacko” as he slammed her for saying “horrible things about the great people of West Virginia and Joe Manchin.”
“But when I say much less offensive things about her, everybody goes wild,” he continued, according to The Hill. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell the real facts about her in my book.”
Billboard reported that Midler lost it when Trump announced that he’s running for president again back in November, tweeting, “Ugh. Piggy is speaking.”
“That’s #Trumpto you. He’s giving the same speech he gave in 2016. After a two year pandemic, and a million American lives lost, the rest of us have moved on. He is ossified. May he rot,” she continued, later adding, “Excuse me. I’m going to be sick.”
If Midler is so ready to admit that she’s “not smart enough” to go into politics as a career, she might also want to confess that she isn’t smart enough to speak about politics either. It’s time for her to take a good look in the mirror and realize that none of us care to hear about her ignorant political opinions!
