Dolly Parton Celebrates 77th Birthday By Releasing New Song About God Speaking To Her In A Dream

The country music legend Dolly Parton is celebrating her 77th birthday today, and to mark the occasion, she’s releasing a powerful new song that was inspired by God speaking to her in a dream. 

Dolly Celebrates Birthday With New Song

In classic Dolly fashion, she took to social media on her birthday to say that she is opting to give this year rather than receive on her big day.

In a video posted to Instagram, she explained that she’s celebrating her birthday by releasing her new song “Don’t Make Me Come Down There,” which was inspired by God speaking to her in a dream.

Dolly Opens Up About New Song

“Well, today is my birthday… and these are my birthday flowers,” Dolly began. “Somebody said, what are you gonna get on your birthday? I said ‘I’m not gonna get, I’m gonna give.’ I’ve got a song that I’m dropping today on my birthday.”

“It’s a song that kinda came to me in a dream, and I felt like it was worth putting out there, something special. Well, it’s special to me,” she continued. “I had a dream about God standing down on a mountain, looking down at us, saying ‘Don’t make me have to come down there.'”

“And then it woke me up, I got up, I started writing this song,” Dolly concluded. “And over a period of weeks and months, I finished it as things would come to me. And I just felt like I should drop it on my birthday. So I hope you enjoy it.”

In the song, Dolly sings that God told her in her dream:

“Don’t make me have to come down there / My children, you’d best beware / I try to be a good father, as all fathers do / But you’re on my last nerve, I’ve had it up to here with you”; “Go to your room and pray ’til you can learn to play fair / Don’t make me have to come down there.”

We Need This Message Now More Than Ever

Taste Of Country reported that Dolly explained that while the song was not a fit for any of the projects she is currently working on, she decided to release it on its own because she feels it carries a message that we need now more than ever. 

“It’s mostly to make people think a little more about shaping up a little better and hopefully starting the new year out trying to do just a little better than what we’re doing,” she explained. “Because we’re asking for it.”

Dolly has long been open about her strong Christian faith.

“Every single day, before I do anything, I wake up and I thank God for the night and ask him to bless the day…and bring all the right stuff in,” she said in a 2020 interview. “And just to guide me, lead me. And I always pray that he’ll let me uplift mankind and glorify him.”

It’s classic Dolly for her to use her own birthday to give us all a gift that carries a strong message about God with it. We would like to wish her a very happy birthday, and many more to come!
