During the 50th Annual American Music Awards on Sunday night, the pop star Pink received a standing ovation after she paid a touching tribute to the late Olivia Newton John, who sadly died earlier this year at the age of 72 following a 30 year battle with cancer.

Pink And Melissa Etheridge Honor Newton John

Daily Mail reported that Pink took the stage in an elegant pink-feathered gown to perform her rendition of “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” which Newton John made famous in her classic 1978 film Grease. The song was a massive hit when it came out, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number seven on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Melissa Etheridge introduced Pink before the performance, and she first took a few moments to remember Newton John.

“From the moment you were in the presence of Olivia Newton-John, you sensed her sweetness, you stood in awe of her welcoming beauty, and you basked in the feeling that she was connecting to you alone,” Etheridge said.

She added that to hear the Australian icon sing “was to feel the power of art to transform feelings, the feelings we all have of love and elation and disappointment into something sublime.”

‘She Was An Absolute Icon’

Pink then brought the house down with her performance, earning herself a standing ovation for her tribute to Newton John. While on the red carpet before the show, Pink didn’t hesitate to praise the late Xanadu star.

“She was an absolute icon, and also, she was a wonderful human being. I loved her voice,” she told Entertainment Tonight of Newton John.

“My daughter just got done doing Grease in her theatre production, and she actually helped me learn the song,” Pink added.

Pink is mother to an 11 year-old daughter Willow and a 5 year-old son Jameson with her husband Carey Hart, and each of them were at the AMAs last night to cheer her on. Check out her full performance below.

‘She Was An Absolute Angel’

Pink had also paid tribute to Newton John immediately after she died back in August.

“I met her maybe three times- and she was an absolute angel. One of the loveliest, kindest, light from within human beings I have ever met,” she wrote. “Kindness personified. May she Rest In Peace and may her family be held in love and light during this difficult time.”

Pink Debuts New Song

Pink opened the AMAs last night by performing her new song “Never Gonna Not Dance Again,” doing so on roller skates!

“AMAs always lets me do really wild stuff,” she explained. “I was walking to the elevator at the hotel, like a week ago, for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the guy that was helping me with the elevator was like, ‘Hey, last time you were here, you were hanging on the outside of the building.’ I was like, ‘How many people do you get to say that to?'”

When asked if she’ll be on skates for the song’s music video, Pink replied, “It’s possible. I like to give people a reason to pray.”

We lost a true legend when Newton John passed away over the summer, and the world will be in mourning for her for quite some time to come. God bless Pink for taking the time to honor her in such a beautiful way. We’re sure that Newton John would have loved her performance!
