The coach for UFC champion Islam Makhachev has plenty on his mind when it comes to his next fight.
Javier Mendez appeared on Submission Radio to discuss the planned 2023 encounter between Makhachev, the lightweight champion, and Alex Volkanovski.
“I think they’re a great, great, great camp over there, and they’re meeting another great camp,” he said. “And let’s see how we can put it together and throw a great fight for the fans. And obviously we’re expecting to win that fight, just like they are, but let’s see if the UFC can put this together like we’re all hoping. And I believe they will.
“And why we like this matchup? Because he’s a great fighter. He’s a great fighter. What’s our advantages? Well, we’re taller, we weigh more. I think we’re better rounded all the way around. Is Alex negative in on everything? Absolutely not.
“He’s got power, he’s a champion. He’s been winning. He’s regarded pound for pound number one. Man, he’s got all the confidence in the world. And look at the achievement of him being able to get two titles. Not many people can say that.”
