Country music star Shania Twain is opening up about a dinner that she once had with Oprah Winfrey; one that she reveals “went sour” when the topic of religion came up.

Twain And Oprah’s Dinner Goes ‘Sour’

While appearing on the Table Manners podcast on Wednesday, Twain was asked about past dinners she’s had that stand out in her mind.

“I think one of my most memorable dinners was with Oprah Winfrey. She’s such a smart lady,” said Twain, 57, adding that the two of them ate out at a restaurant together. Though she mentioned the 1990s at one point, it’s unclear when this specific dinner occurred, according to People Magazine

While the dinner started off well, it went off the rails when religion came up.

“It was great to just sit and have real talks, but as soon as we started talking about religion, it all went sour. So, I said, ‘Let’s stop talking about religion!'” Twain recalled. “She is quite religious.”

It soon became clear that the two women did not see eye-to-eye on this particular topic, as Twain isn’t a particularly religious person herself.

“I’m not religious in the sense that I’m dedicated to a religion. I’m much more of a spiritual person,” she admitted. “I would say I’m a seeker.”

Twain Learns Her Lesson

“Everyone always says, ‘Never talk about politics or religion,'” the pop-country singer noted, citing the classic etiquette quote often recited to prevent unnecessary conflicts.

Twain had wanted to have an open discussion about their religious differences, but Oprah let it be known that “it just wasn’t debatable.”

“There was no room for debate, and I like to debate,” Twain declared. “Canadians like to debate everything. So, I’m like, ‘Oh, OK. It’s time to change the subject.'”

Twain has been interviewed by Oprah many times over the years, and they even collaborated on the 2011 docuseries Why Not? With Shania Twain, which ran for six episodes on Winfrey’s network, OWN. If they work together again, we’re guessing they’ll be avoiding the topic of religion!

Oprah Opens Up About Religion

In a 2015 interview with AARP Bulletin, Oprah discussed her strong religious faith as someone who grew up Baptist. She also talked about how she views those who come from different backgrounds.

“For me to live in a world that is not inclusive of other people who are not Christian would be the opposite of Christianity,” she said at the time. “I can’t define ‘God,’ so to be open to the mystical and mystery of God is a natural part of myself.

“So people criticize me for not being what they are, and I say, it’s working for me and has worked for me and continues to work for me, in a way that fills me with a sense of peace and contentment about what God means to me,” Oprah added.

Twain’s New Song

Twain is busier than ever these days, and she released a new, ’80s-inspired single called “Waking Up Dreaming” earlier this month. She recently talked to The Sun about why she chose to go topless on the song’s cover artwork, which sees her wearing only a cowboy hat, colorful boots, and a white shirt tied around her waist.

“I styled that photograph myself. It was all about taking off the bra, taking off the shirt, tying the shirt around my waist,” Twain explained. “This is a statement of being comfortable in my own skin and just being really myself.”

As for those who have criticized her for the photo, Twain said, “You have to be strong. I never really get angry with criticism. You can’t please everybody, that’s normal.”

Twain’s story about her dinner with Oprah serves as a reminder that sometimes, it really is best to avoid the subjects of politics and religion with those close to us. When it comes to religion, Twain likely will not be making that mistake again in the future!
