Queen Elizabeth, who died earlier this month at the age of 96, felt “hurt and exhausted” by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepping down as senior royals and then repeatedly bashing the royal family in her final years, according to a new book.

Queen ‘Was Very Hurt’

Daily Mail reported that in her new book, “The New Royals – Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown,” renowned royal expert Katie Nicholl alleges that a source who was close to the Queen told her that the monarch was so upset by Meghan and Harry’s “Megxit” from the royal family that she didn’t like to even think about it.

Though the Queen was hurt by Meghan and Harry stepping down as senior royals, she also “made it clear that if Harry and Meghan chose to leave, they could not reap the benefits of being royal,” according to an excerpt of the book shared by Nicholl herself in a recent column for Vanity Fair,

“According to a friend, privately the queen confided that she was exhausted by the turmoil of their decision,” the royal expert continued. “She was very hurt and told me, ‘I don’t know, I don’t care, and I don’t want to think about it anymore,’ says that person.”

Queen Most Upset By Not Getting To See Archie And Lilibet

The insider went on to say that the Queen was most upset by Meghan and Harry’s move to California because it meant that she would rarely get to see Archie and Lilibet.

“It was a source of sadness to the queen that she got to see so little of Archie and Lilibetand that Harry and Meghan were not able to join her for a weekend at Balmoral in August, when the Queen used to host a ‘sleepover’ for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” Nicholl wrote.

Additionally, the rift between her son, King Charles, and Harry “caused the queen so much upset.”

King ‘Desperately Wants To Reconcile’

Elsewhere in her book, Nicholl claims that the King is eager to mend the rift between Harry and the rest of the royal family, saying that he “desperately wants to reconcile with his son.”

In his first speech as King given the day after the Queen’s death, Charles pointedly said, “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.” Many saw this as the King extending an “olive branch” to the couple.

Healing this rift, however, may be easier said than done, given how much Meghan and Harry have been bashing the royal family publicly in the two years since stepping down as senior royals.

During that time, they’ve accused the royal family of such serious offenses as racism and being insensitive to mental health struggles, forcing the Queen to deal with unnecessary stress and heartbreak in what turned out to be her final years.

What Meghan and Harry did to the Queen at the end of her life will be unforgivable in the eyes of many. We can only find solace in the fact that Her Majesty is now at peace, and any attacks from Meghan and Harry can no longer hurt her.
