Joy Behar Takes Shot At Gwyneth Paltrow For Naming Her Daughter Apple – “I Draw The Line At Fruits And Vegetables”

During a recent episode of the ABC talk show The View, co-host Joy Behar took a dig at Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow for the name she chose for her daughter Apple Martin, now 18, who she shares with her ex-husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Behar Mocks Paltrow For Daughter’s Name

Behar mocked Paltrow for “naming her child after a fruit” during a segment that aired on Friday last week, in which the talk show’s panel discussed the actress celebrating her 50th birthday, which happens to be today, by sharing some of the regrets she has from her first half-century. 

“Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow will celebrate her 50th birthday — I can’t believe she’s ever gonna be 50, I can’t believe it — on Sept. 27,” Behar said, as transcribed by Decider. “Time flies, doesn’t it, girls?”

“To mark the occasion, she posted a personal essay in which she shared some of her regrets. Some of them are like hurting people, not speaking her truth more often, you know, like that,” she continued, before deadpanning, “Naming her child after a fruit.”

“Oh, she did do that,” her co-host Sunny Hostin replied, with co-host Sara Haines jumping in to say, “That was ad-libbing! That was not part of the [essay.]”

Behar, however, refused to back down.

“The kid’s name is Apple,” she said. “Come on! I draw the line at fruits and vegetables.”

During an Instagram Q&A back in April, Paltrow opened up about how she and her ex came up with the name Apple for their daughter.

“Her dad came up with the name and I fell in love with it,” she explained, according to E! News. “I thought it was original and cool. I can’t imagine her being called anything else.”

Paltrow Compares Taking Apple To College To Giving Birth

During a recent interview to mark her 50th birthday, Paltrow raised eyebrows when she compared dropping Apple off for college this year to giving birth.

“I know this sounds nuts, but it feels almost as profound as giving birth,” she said while appearing on “CBS Sunday Morning” last weekend. 

Paltrow also talked about how well she gets along with Apple’s father, Chris Martin, who she was married to from 2003 until 2016. 

“He’s completely my family, and I love him,” she said. “And he would do anything for me. I would do anything for him. He would do anything for our kids. We really did commit to wanting our children to be as unscathed by the divorce as possible.”

Paltrow’s Actual Regrets

While naming her daughter after a fruit was not one of the regrets Paltrow listed out, she opened up about some of her other ones.

“I have hurt people, never intentionally, but I have done so just the same,” she said, according to Daily Mail. “I have let people down by not being who they needed me to be. I have betrayed myself to keep the peace.”

“I have crossed lines, the thoughts of which sometimes rip me from sleep and suspend me into the hollowness of shame for a long, dark night,” Paltrow added. “Most regretfully, and so often, I have not spoken my truth to spare some perceived consequence, that hurting someone will tear us both apart.”

While Apple’s name was mocked around the time of her birth in 2004, it’s old news now, given the fact that she’s 18 years-old, so it’s surprising that Behar would choose to joke about it these days. Perhaps there’s some jealousy at play here, as Behar is preparing to turn 80 next month, so she’d likely give anything to be turning 50 instead.
