In his new music video for his song “No Body,” the country music star Blake Shelton rocked the same style of mullet that he became famous with back in the 1990s. In a new interview, Shelton is opening up about what it was like to have this hairstyle again for this “goofy” music video.

Shelton Brings Back Mullet

“I felt like the world needs to just have some fun for a minute,” Shelton told Entertainment Tonight. “The thing about this song, once we cut it and were listening to it back, is like, ‘Man, I don’t know if we meant to do this but it kind of sounds like ’90s country music to me.’ That’s one of the things I love about Luke Combs’ records, you know, he sounds like he could have made those records in the ’90s and people are really drawn to that.”

For Shelton, it was not difficult to go back to his roots.

“I thought, ‘Man, I’ll just go back to the old Blake, put my hat back on and put a mullet wig on and make a video,'” he joked. “Because this song sounds like it came out of that era. That’s why I thought it would be a great song for now, though, because I feel like lately we all kinda long for the good old days.”

“I feel like myself again,” he teased as he put his mullet wig on. Once he’d had it on for a while, however, Shelton remembered why he’d ditched this hairstyle years ago.

‘I Don’t Miss It’

“I don’t miss it,” he said of the mullet. “It’s hot, it just sticks to my neck … it drives me nuts. I instantly remembered how much my hair got on my nerves back in the day, but I wouldn’t give it up because people were asking me to cut my hair. And because they were asking me, and the record label was pressuring me, there was no way in hell I was gonna cut it — just out of spite.”

Shelton talked more about this in an interview with People Magazine

“[Wearing the mullet] felt completely natural to me,” he said. “Especially making the video in this particular bar. The air conditioning wasn’t on. It was hot in there.”

“Hair was sticking to my neck and the side of my face,” Shelton continued. “And I remember thinking, ‘Oh yeah, this is why I ended up cutting my mullet off.’ Not because it wasn’t cool anymore or trendy, just because it was physically irritating.”

Shelton Is Still Devoted To Country Music

Shelton had a mullet hairstyle when he burst onto the Nashville scene back in 1994, and he kept it until around 2006. Though he’s also busy with his gig coaching on “The Voice,” Shelton made it clear that he is first and foremost a country music singer.

“All I ever considered myself was a country singer,” he says. “I love country music and that’s on my horizon — from a career standpoint — just keeping that thing going and having songs on the radio and being able to go out and tour and play. That’s what I do. I am a country singer.”

God bless Shelton for continuing to bring joy to his millions of fans with his musical abilities! He truly is one of a kind, and we can’t wait to see what other songs he has in store for us in the years to come.
