Before Her Death, Olivia Newton-John Shared Why She Never Dated John Travolta

The world is still in mourning for the legendary Olivia Newton-John, who tragically passed away on Monday at the age of 73 after a thirty-year battle with cancer. Now, it’s been revealed that in one of her final interviews, she confessed to being intensely attracted to her Grease co-star John Travolta.

‘It Was Magic’

Newton-John and Travolta starred together as Sandy and Danny in the classic 1978 film Grease. In a newly-surfaced 2019 interview, Newton-John revealed that the chemistry between her and Travolta was electric from the moment they walked on set.

“John came out to meet me,” she recalled, according to Daily Mail. “Our eyes met. When we walked inside the room together, it was magic, and everyone saw it.  They couldn’t deny this kind of chemistry.”

Newton-John also said that Travolta was very protective of her on the movie’s set. He even purposefully walked in front of the camera while they filmed the famous bonfire scene.

“Sorry I messed up. Liv, I did that on purpose because I don’t want them to use that take,” he told her. “I know you can do better.”

“I had great love and support from him and the feeling was mutual,” she remembered. “I would be forever grateful for his concern.”

Why Newton-John And Travolta Never Dated

Newton-John also explained why she and Travolta never dated, despite being attracted to each other. 

“On the Grease set, he would tell me. ‘Liv, it’s every guy’s dream to have you as his girlfriend,'” she recounted. “Yes, we really liked each other and there was an attraction, but we would never date because we were both involved with other people at the time and both of us have a loyalty streak that runs deep.”

Newton-John went on to say that things “never went beyond friendship with John,” and Travolta himself has corroborated this. 

“It almost happened between us a few times, but it didn’t,” the 68-year-old star once said. “Sometimes life just offers you the wrong timing. We had to leave it as dear friends.”

At the time of her death, Newton-John had been married to John Easterling since 2008. She was previously married to Matt Lattanzi, with whom she shared her daughter, Chloe, from 1984 until they divorced in 1995.

Travolta married the actress Kelly Preston in 1991, but she tragically died in 2020 after a secret two-year battle with breast cancer. They had three children together: Jett, Ella Bleu, 22, and Benjamin, 11. Sadly, Jett died in 2019 at the age of 16 after suffering a seizure and hitting his head on a bathtub.

Travolta Honors Newton-John

Travolta was one of the first to pay tribute to Newton-John after her death was announced.

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better,” he wrote on social media. “Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again.” 

“Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!” he added. “Your Danny, your John!”
