Thor: Love And Thunder Director Taika Waititi Casts Doubt On Whether His Star Wars Film Will Ever Get Made

Thor: Love and Thunder director and IG-11 actor Taika Waititi recently cast some doubt on whether or not his announced Star Wars film will ever get made.

Waititi’s Star Wars film was announced to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film back on May 4, 2020. On the official Star Wars website, Lucasfilm announced, “Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi  who recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the widely-acclaimed first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release.”

They added, “Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award® nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917.”

Taika Waititi is IG-11 in the Disney+ series THE MANDALORIAN.

However, the film not make it out of development as Waititi recently told The New York Times that he’s still trying to write the script for the film.

“I’m trying to write the ‘Star Wars’ idea at the moment,” he said. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

He also indicated he might put the script on hold for another six months saying, “I am cool as well to take six months off and just go hang out with my kids.”

Waititi’s comments come amid middling fan feedback for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show despite Ewan McGregor claiming the show’s premiere was the most watched Disney+ premiere of all time.

While it might have been the most watched Disney+ premiere of all time, the show was trounced by Stranger Things according to newly released Nielsen data. Nielsen reports that Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first three episodes was brought in 958 million minutes watched while Stranger Things racked up 7.203 billion minutes watched. Obi-Wan Kenobi was even beat by The Lincoln Lawyer in its third week on the chart.
