Rory MacDonald

Rory MacDonald is one of the best fighters in the world. And he calls PFL home.

MacDonald will look to move one step closer to claiming the welterweight title when he faces Magomed Umalatov at PFL Playoffs 8 on August 13.

The event takes place overseas from the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. MacDonald vs. Umalatov will be the main event live on ESPN and ESPN+.

In the other welterweight semifinal, Sadibou Sy battles Carlos Leal.

But this is all about MacDonald.

A former UFC title contender and Bellator champion, MacDonald had a less-than-ideal 2021 season. But he has more than made up for it this year.

The 32-year-old from Canada submitted Brett Cooper back in May to secure his standing in the division. He was bested by Sy this past July by decision, but held firm with the No. 1 position.

Last year, MacDonald lost to both Gleison Tibau and Ray Cooper III, ending his run.

While he knows a rematch with Sy would be a tremendous way to complete the 2022 season and earn redemption, he must first get through Umalatov.

In 33 professional matches, MacDonald has picked up 23 wins, including nine by submission. His 2015 battle with Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 was hailed as the “Fight of the Year” by most, and on a short list for best fights of all-time.

But MacDonald has picked up wins over the likes of former Bellator champion Douglas Lima, former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine, ex-UFC champion Tyron Woodley, legend BJ Penn and even Nate Diaz.

If MacDonald can add PFL champion to his resume, it will be another peg to hang his hat on at the end of the day as he works to be one of the best ever.
