Dolly Parton Makes ‘Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol’ Set In Tennessee

Dolly Parton has made "Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol," a retelling of "A Christmas Carol" that is set in Tennessee.

The country music legend Dolly Parton has made her own version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” and it’s called “Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol – A New Musical.” The show will be coming to London later this year, just in time for the holiday season!

Parton’s Version Of ‘A Christmas Carol’

Timeout reported that Parton’s version of this Christmas classic is set in East Tennessee in the 1930s, with Ebeneezer Scrooge being the grouchy owner of a mining town who finds himself being approached by three spirits during a holiday snowstorm.

“As a Christmas Eve snowstorm approaches, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who compel him to see life anew and discover that love is the greatest and most precious gift we have,” the show’s description states. “Dickens’ classic characters and Dolly Parton’s one-of-a-kind songwriting and storytelling expertise are certain to make this the most joyful Christmas event.”

The show was adapted by David H. Bell, Paul T. Couch, and Curt Wollan, with music and lyrics by Parton herself. The songs she wrote for the show are more serious than the bangers that she is known for, as they reflect both the romance and difficulty of life in Great Depression-era Tennessee. The show will be heading to London just in time for the holidays later this year.

“Bringing our reimagined Charles Dickens classic to London feels like a homecoming,” Parton said. “My songs weave the music of my beautiful Smoky Mountains into this timeless Christmas story, and I can’t wait for London audiences to hear them as we tell that story, set in a place that is truly special to me.”

Parton’s Other Upcoming Christmas Project

This comes weeks after it was announced that Parton will be starring in a new movie musical for NBC called “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas,” which has been described as a “modern-day movie musical about the making of a network TV special.”

“Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas is the frenetic backstage story and delightful on-camera results of Dolly’s desire to uplift an exhausted world’s spirits by sharing the unique ‘mountain magic’ she has always found in and around Dollywood at Christmas,” the movie’s description states, according to TV Insider.

“Throughout the movie’s production numbers and rehearsal chaos, Dolly finds herself taking a private journey into her past, guided by the mysterious appearances of her personal Three Wise Men,” it adds.

“When it’s time for her big special to air live, a renewed and inspired Dolly goes rogue and shows the world that the real magic of Christmas lies in the hearts of the children we all once were, the realization that Christmas is about the people we share it with, and how her faith remains the common thread between Christmases past, present, and future,” the description continues.

Parton’s Past Christmas Specials

This will be the third Christmas special Parton has taken part in for NBC, with the first two being “Coat Of Many Colors” in 2015 and “Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle of Love” the next year. She’s also starred in CBS’s “A Holly Dolly Christmas” and Netflix’s “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” both of which came out in 2020.

Clearly, Parton loves Christmas just as much as we all do, and we can’t wait to see her new Christmas projects later this year!
