Last week, we reported on the defamation lawsuit that has been filed against Meghan Markle by her estranged half-sister Samantha. Now, Meghan is firing back at Samantha, filing court documents to dismiss her “meritless defamation case,” claiming the “dispute has no place in this court or any other.”
In court documents obtained by E! News, Meghan’s lawyers argued that Samantha is asking a court to adjudicate whether she and Meghan “had ever ‘been close,'” how many times the two ‘crossed paths’ as adults and whether Meghan’s feelings that she ‘grew up as an only child’ are ‘true’ or false.'”
“We do not empanel juries to rule on whether two people are ‘close,’ or whether one genuinely feels that they ‘grew up as an only child,'” Meghan’s legal team added. “Courts are not equipped to adjudicate the legitimacy of a person’s feelings about their childhood and relationships. Nor should they be.”
Not stopping there, Meghan’s lawyers claimed that Samantha’s complaint “does not state a claim for defamation or injurious falsehood.” For that reason, they are asking a judge to dismiss the case, and for Meghan to be given attorney’s fees and costs connected with the case.

Samantha filed her lawsuit back in March, alleging that Meghan had spread a false “rags to royalty” narrative about herself in her bombshell tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, when she claimed that she was never close to Samantha or their half-brother Thomas.
“I don’t feel comfortable talking about people that I really don’t know,” Meghan said in the March of 2021 interview. “I grew up as an only child, which everyone who grew up around me knows, and I wished I had siblings. I would have loved to have had siblings.”
Meghan went on to allege that Samantha only changed her name back to Markle when news of her dating Prince Harry broke.
“She changed her last name back to Markle in — I think she was in her early 50s at that time — only when I started dating Harry,” Meghan said in the March of 2021 interview. “So I think that says enough.”
“When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with,” she added. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about people that I really don’t know.”

Samantha alleged in her lawsuit that this is false, claiming that she always went by Markle. She also accused Meghan of lying about her and their father Thomas Sr. so that they “could not interfere with or contradict the false narrative and fairytale life story [she] concocted.”
Samantha claimed in her lawsuit that Meghan’s “lies” have hurt sales of her autobiography, stopped her from getting jobs, and gave her emotional distress.
Meghan has been estranged from the entire Markle side of her family since before her marriage to Harry in May of 2018. Since her wedding, Samantha especially has been an outspoken critic of Meghan’s even penning the scathing book “The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister: A Memoir, Part One.”
Only time will tell if Meghan will be able to get this lawsuit tossed out, but regardless of the court’s ruling, it doesn’t seem like she’ll be making up with Samantha anytime soon.
