A chilling video is going viral today showing the moment a 34-year-old man is gored by a 1,800lb charging bison as he saves the life of a little boy who was in the animal’s path at Yellowstone National Park.

Check out the harrowing moment for yourself below.

Bison Goes Man

Daily Mail reported that the man was visiting from Colorado Springs, and he managed to narrowly snatch the little boy away from the charging bison on Monday. Park rangers have previously warned visitors to stay 75ft (25 yards) away from bison, explaining that they are “wild animals” that feel “threatened” if they are approached.

In the video above, you’ll see adults walking with the little boy on a path toward the bison when the animal suddenly begins charging at them. The 34-year-old man, who was walking ahead of his family, responds by running back towards them with the clear goal of saving the child.

The man managed to lift the little boy up and throw him to safety before the bison grabbed onto the man’s arm and pick him up into the air. Thankfully, the man was able to make his escape, narrowly getting out of there with his life.

The unidentified man was rushed in an ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where he received treatment for an injury to his arm.

“The male was walking with his family on a boardwalk when a bull bison charged the group,” the National Park Service said in a statement. “Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male.”

Man Who Filmed Attack Speaks Out

The attack was filmed by Rob Goodell, who told Cowboy State Daily that “the dad and the kid were just walking up to the bison when the bison took off.”

“Anyone who says that the bison just attacked that guy or whatever, that’s bulls**t,” he continued. “The bison was just protecting his ground.”

Goodell went on to say that he had been watching the family before he started filming because he could see how close they were to the bison and that he only pulled out his phone to start filming when it became clear that the situation was escalating.

“I didn’t even say anything during the entire video because I just assumed that guy was going to get murdered,” Goodell said. “It was like holy c***, this is crazy.”

Bison are six feet tall and can run three times faster than humans, and they can also weigh up to 2,000 pounds.

Park Rangers Sound Off

“Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild and can be dangerous when approached,” park rangers warned. “When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space.”

“Stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes – and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves,” they added. “If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in proximity.”

It’s important for people to heed these warnings when visiting a place like Yellowstone, as just because you are in a national park, it does not mean that you are safe. We are glad that this family was able to escape with their lives, but we hope this video serves as a reminder to others to not behave as foolishly as they did.
