The third and final of the esteemed Neon Genesis Evangelion creator’s cinematic reimaginings of classic tokusatsu icons following Shin Godzilla and the recently released Shin Ultraman, Shin Kamen Rider will serve as an updated version of the franchise’s first installment, Kamen Rider (1971).
Like the original series, Shin Kamen Rider follows the story of Takeshi Hongo, a young Japanese college student who finds himself abducted by the evil organization known as SHOCKER and forcibly converted into one of their cyborg warriors.
However, before their brainwashing can fully take hold, Hongo is freed by SHOCKER scientist Hiroshi Midorikawa, who is subsequently killed by the organization for his treason.
In the wake of his death, Hongo takes up the name of Kamen Rider and declares himself a hero of justice, vowing to not only protect Dr. Midorikawa’s daughter Ruriko from SHOCKER’s grasp – despite her mistaken belief that he was the one responsible for killing her father – but also use his newfound abilities to wipe the villains from the face of the Earth.
He is later joined in his fight by Ichimonji, a photographer who was similarly abducted and surgically altered by SHOCKER, whom Hongo saves from being brainwashed and inspires to fight alongside him as Rider-2.
Shin Kamen Rider is currently set to release in Japanese theaters on March 23rd, 2023.
