In a shocking interview with David Letterman that was filmed before his infamous Oscars slap of Chris Rock, Will Smith revealed that he had hallucinated about his career being destroyed while on an ayahuasca drug trip.

This was shown in a clip from Letterman’s Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” and you can check it out for yourself below.

Smith’s Ayahuasca Experience

Daily Mail reported that Smith began by saying that he was “terrified” to take ayahuasca, a South American drink that is brewed from plants and leads people to have hallucinations and visions, some of which supposedly have therapeutic effects.

“I decided that it was something that, you know, I wanted to try,” Smith told Letterman. He went on to say that the high felt like creating two realities that are both “100 percent present” at the same time.

“It’s not superimposed over this reality,” he said. “They’re totally separate.”

Smith described his hallucination of his career imploding as being “the individual most hellish psychological experience of my life.”

“You always feel like, ‘Maybe it won’t kick in this time,'” he recalled. “All of a sudden, it’s like I start seeing all of my money flying away.”

“And my house is flying away. And my career is gone,” Smith added. “And I’m trying to, like, grab for my money and my career. My whole life is getting destroyed.”

Letterman chimed in to say that this must be his “fear in real life.”

Smith’s Hallucination Gets Worse

Smith then recounted that he felt like he was going to vomit, which is a common ayahuasca side effect, before he heard a menacing voice in his head say, “This is what the f*** it is. This is what the f*** life is.”

The most terrifying moment of the hallucination came when Smith heard his 21-year-old daughter Willow screaming “Daddy, help me! Daddy! How come you won’t help me?”

“I don’t see,” Smith shouted back. It was then that the shaman who was assisting with his experience patted him on the back and told him to relax.

“Then slowly, I stopped caring about my money, I just wanted to get to Willow,” Smith remembered. “I stopped caring about my house, about my career.”

‘Hell Going On In My Mind’

Smith added that while he “settled down,” the “voice was still at 100 percent.”

“I still hear Willow screaming. My money is still flying away, but I’m going —’ he said as he mimed taking deep breaths,” Smith continued. “And I’m totally calm, even though there’s hell going on in my mind. When I came out of it, I realized that anything that happens in my life, I can handle it.”

“I can handle any person that I lose, I can handle anything that goes wrong in my life, I can handle anything in my marriage,” he stated. “I can handle anything that his life has to offer me.”

Smith concluded by trying to reassure himself that this hallucination would never actually happen. His words were ironic, given the fact that weeks later, he may have destroyed his career by slapping Rock at the Oscars. Since then, all of Smith’s film and television projects have been put on hold.

“First of all, 99 percent of the s*** you worry about never happens, adding that the vast majority of ‘your pain and your misery is all self-generated — it’s not real,” Smith said at the end of the clip.

In the end, Smith may have spoken a bit too fast on that. Only time will tell if the hallucination was actually a premonition of sorts, as it’s unclear whether his Hollywood career will ever recover from the Oscars slap that was heard around the world.
