Jordan Spieth won the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, SC with a very special caddy. Son Sammy and wife Annie were there in uniform to support him as he beat Patrick Cantlay for his 13th victory on the PGA Tour.
Sammy was born a few months before the tournament on November 14, 2021, but it’s never too early to hit the links and support your dad! And Jordan needed all the support he could get. He felt like he played well, but he didn’t think it would be enough.
“I needed a lot of things to go right,” he said.
Of course, Jordan needed a caddy who could actually carry his clubs, so Sammy will have to wait a few years before he can really caddy for his dad. But who knows? By then he may be on his way to a successful golf career of his own.
But this wasn’t the first time Jordan had a family member caddy for him. His dad has taken over for Michael Greller, Jordan’s usual caddy, and committed “the cardinal sin of caddieing.”
While she didn’t caddy for him, Jordan’s wife did have some good advice for the golfer. After missing a short putt on the final hole on Saturday, Jordan was frustrated with himself. Annie told him to take five seconds after a missed putt before tapping it in. Jordan said his wife doesn’t usually offer him golf advice, but this tip might have helped him win.
“There were a couple times I was just going to rake it,” Jordan said, “and I was like, no, I’ve got to take 5 seconds.”
Jordan said this win meant a lot to him as a dad. It was his first victory since Sammy was born. Hopefully the first of many!
