Sometimes you want to go on a trip on your own. You want to do something exciting and explore a new place on your own terms. Wondering where to go next? This list of the three best solo travel destinations might help!
I love to travel solo. I love the freedom to discover a place on my terms and my timeline and I love making new friends and getting to know a city on an intimate level.
This list is made up of places I’ve traveled to alone and filled with great solo activities and places where you can strike up a conversation and make some new friends. I’ve put them in order from an easy weekend trip to something that you would need to spend a few days in (at least) and some serious scratch on.
So here are three great cities for the solo traveler.
Wait..before you leave this page! Hear me out. Cleveland is one of America’s most underrated cities and there is so much to explore.
From the charming West Side Market:
To the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:
To a lot of fun breweries, like Platform:
Clevlanders are a friendly bunch and will strike up a conversation with you very easily.
Brooklyn is the hipster capital of the world. And while that usually means a lot of eye-rolling and post-post-ironic attitudes, it can lead to some fun places to explore, eat, and drink. So here’s a sample itinerary of a day I spent in BK.
Breakfast and coffee at Coffee Project NY
Lunch at Otway
A small place that does simple things very very well. Also a great breakfast option.
Explore Brooklyn Museum.
New York’s second-largest museum packs a wide array of classic and contemporary art. Definitely a great way to lose an afternoon.
Pre-Dinner Drinks at Do or Dive
Don’t be fooled by the outside, the neighborhood, or the decor, this place does serious cocktails extremely well. A very friendly staff will just as easily pour you the best Negroni you’ve ever had or pop open a can of PBR.
Dinner at Roberta’s (Bushwick)
If you want the best, most unpretentious pizza you’ve ever had in your life, then Roberta’s is your best bet. They don’t take reservations, so you might need to get there a bit early. But the pizza and the drinks are phenomenal.
Comedy At BKLYN Comedy Club
A fun venue to catch the best up-and-coming comics in the city.
OK, this one is probably a stretch. But it is cheap(ish) to fly to CPH if you’re near the east coast. Copenhagen is my favorite place in Europe to visit. So much so that I broke my rule about going to a place more than once within five years rule. Danes are an immensely open and fun people who are open to curious travelers. And you’ll won’t even have to brush up on your Danish as so many Danes are fluent in English.
I’d recommend a free walking tour of the city on your first day. If walking isn’t your thing, then you can hop on a bike travel through the most bike-friendly city in the world.
And for food? Your options are endless. Copenhagen is a mecca for foodies. You’ve probably heard of Noma but there are so many places to visit and explore a wide-array of cuisines. From Scandanavian-influenced Mexican at Sanchez.
To Texas-Style BBQ with a Danish twist at Warpigs.
If you’re interested in Scandanavian history and everything Viking, then Denmark’s National Museum is your one-stop-shop.
They even have an extremely creepy but very cool dollhouse collection.
Besides the food, CPH is known for its great craft beer scene and probably has the beer bar in the world in Mikkeller Bar. There are dozens of amazing craft beer spots in CPH.
