John Cena On Being “Qualified” For Fatherhood

John Cena has gone from the squared circle to the big screen. The former WWE champion, (and the company’s biggest draw of the 2000s) is starring in the HBO Max series Peacemaker, based on the character Cena played in last year’s hit The Suicide Squad.

Here’s the official trailer for Peacemaker:

Cena, whose hesitation about children led to his break-up with Nikki Bella, discussed his thought process on forgoing children.

Promoting the show, the leader of the Cenation was asked by Drew Barrymore* why he hasn’t made the jump to fatherhood.

Take a look:

Cena gave an answer that, personally, I found very sad.

After going through everything he has to do to maintain his life and high-level career, Cena seems to admit he doesn’t have a passion for being a father.

“This is just my perspective, totally not qualified, but I think just because you might be good at something, for me, is not a strong enough reason to do that. You have to have passion for it. You have to have a fuel for it. It’s like saying to someone, ‘Man, you know you are pretty good with your hands. You would be a great carpenter.’ But if I want to be an actor, I am going to be an actor. Just to say to somebody you have a great interaction with young people, that’s flattering.”

It is sad, but I admire his honesty.

If you aren’t passionate about being a father and having children, I don’t think you should. Too many people have kids not because they want them but because they feel it to be some sort of obligation.

John Cena & Make-A-Wish

Cena brings up his work with Make-A-Wish when discussing his current desire to not have kids.

“The reason I love Make-A-Wish so much is because those are those families’ wishes. You can do anything you want, and Make-A-Wish’s list is enormous, they literally will do anything you want. ‘I want to kick it with John Cena and go see him wrestle.’ That is the coolest thing I have ever heard in my life.”

Cena has famously granted more wishes than anyone, a staggering 650 during his time with the WWE. Cena seems to really value the connections he makes through his Make-A-Wish work.

However, I can’t help but wonder if seeing all those dying kids has an effect on Cena wanting to have children? Meeting these young people who are months away from passing on has to have an effect on him.

*Can we talk about Drew Barrymore being a talk show host? Are they giving talk shows to everyone now? Not that she isn’t a great host. She has a great personality and is a nice, positive break from The View and the other low-brow whatnot on during the day. It is just weird that the girl from ET is now hosting a ladies’ talk show.
