Former champion Benson Henderson wants to wear a world title once again.
Henderson meets Islam Mamedov this Saturday at Bellator 273 live on Showtime. The event takes place from the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
For the former WEC and UFC champion, adding ‘Bellator champion’ to his resume remains the ultimate goal.
“I have to have the Bellator belt around my waist, otherwise things just don’t make sense,” Henderson said. “I am not going to stop until that happens. I’ll keep going until the wheels fall off. I just need to go out there and do the things I need to do, get my hands raised to make sure I get that Bellator title shot.”
The 33-year-old has dropped his last three, including a decision in October in Phoenix to Brent Primus. Prior to that, he had reeled off four consecutive wins.
“I am incredibly happy and thankful to be fighting in my adopted hometown,” Henderson said. “I enjoy having my family, friends, and my fans come out and support me. I won’t be doing this much longer, so it definitely means a lot to me.”
Henderson has another special reason for still chasing that title after all these years. And he wants Bellator to know he is willing to meet anybody to get there.
“My wife asked me to get her a third belt five or six years ago. I will get my wife a third belt,” he said. “I am your guy. I am your huckleberry. If Islam is the quickest way back to a title shot, sign me up.”
Bellator 273 features Ryan Bader vs. Valentin Moldavsky for the unified heavyweight title.
