Meghan McCain Dishes On Just How ‘Toxic’ Joy Behar And ‘The View’ Were

In her upcoming audio memoir Bad Republican, Meghan McCain has revealed what Joy Behar did that made her break down in tears immediately after she returned to “The View” from maternity leave earlier this year. McCain has since left “The View,” where she served as the token conservative for four years.

McCain said the show was a “a toxic work environment.”

“You can watch the show and see that it’s unhinged and disorganized and rowdy. For me personally, it felt extremely isolating because of my political ideology. I was the only conservative on the show. The third year, they ended up hiring a producer for me who was also conservative.”

It’s also been reported that “The View” staffers have been “banned” from talking to McCain by an executive producer on the ABC talk show.

Behar Made McCain ‘Burst Into Tears’

Daily Mail reported that McCain said she “burst into tears” when Behar said that she didn’t miss her on live television upon her return from maternity leave.

“I had been gone for three months and I assumed they had missed me… I was wrong,” McCain said.

The moment took place back in January on McCain’s second day back on the show after giving birth to her daughter Liberty, and it occurred as she was bickering with Behar.

“To ease the tension, I said: ‘Joy, you missed me so much when I was on maternity leave,'” McCain recounted.

“I did not,” Behar bluntly replied. “I did not miss you. Zero.”

Take a look at that exchange here:

This Left McCain Devastated

This hit McCain hard because she was suffering from postpartum anxiety at the time.

McCain recalls the moment in her audio her book, “Joy seemed to smell that vulnerability like a shark smells blood in the water, and she took after it. When we broke for commercial I burst into tears — not just like tearing up — uncontrollable sobbing.”

“Until that moment it hadn’t even occurred to me that Joy hadn’t missed me,” McCain continued. “She texted me to see a baby picture of Liberty and she had seemed happy for me. We chatted in a friendly way. I believe that despite all our differences, deep down we had a mutual understanding of respect for each other.

The moment was the most difficult one in McCain’s entire television career.

“Nothing anyone has ever said to me on camera, since I have been giving interviews, since I was 22 years old, has ever hit this hard,” McCain said. “I felt like I’d been slapped. She yelled out at me sharp and intensely, and I believed her. ‘That’s so nasty,’ I said, unable to hide my shock. ‘That’s so rude.'”

McCain gave an in-depth interview to Variety about her time on “The View.”

Here are a couple excerpts from the interview:

How did you and Joy get along at first?

McCain: Fine. There were pockets of time when Joy and I had a great relationship. We have foundational things that are similar. We’re both strong. We were both unemotional. Neither of us like talking about our personal life on camera. I found a lot of synergy between us as women.

Did ABC ever give you notes?

McCain: Barbara Fedida told me to smile more. Things about my hair and clothes. I should wear brighter colors. In my exit interview, the last thing I told Kim is, “You got to change the culture on the show or the culture is going to change you, ‘Ellen’ style.” They’ve got to start changing things or it will not survive.

‘The View’ Staffers Allegedly Banned From Talking To McCain

McCain left the show in July, revealing in her book that she made the decision to exit in part because Behar and fellow cohost Whoopi Goldberg had turned on her.

Sources told Page Six that Brian Teta, an executive producer of “The View,” is so angry about McCain’s tell-all memoir that he has banned staffers on the ABC show from speaking with her.

“Brian has lost his mind. What does he think this is?” this source said. “A cult, where everyone has to listen to what he has to say? We literally report into the news division. We’re being told not to talk to someone on the outside, who has different political views… who used to work with us.”

The staffer went on to say that for the record, “many of us are still in contact with her.”

A spokesperson for “The View” has since denied the ban, saying, “This is not true. No one has been banned from talking to Meghan. Our focus is on the exciting season ahead and we wish the best for Meghan in her next chapter.”

Joy Behar and her fellow liberals on “The View” seem to have picked the wrong woman to mess with when they turned on Meghan McCain!

It will certainly be interesting to see what else comes to light in this explosive memoir.

James Conrad

James Conrad’s passion for politics is only overshadowed by his longstanding interest in Hollywood. His unique perspective as a gay conservative fuels him to challenge celebrity views and those who think they have a right to tell anyone how to think or vote. James proudly wields his minority point of view to combat identity politics and cut through his typecast. Fun fact: James’ guilty pleasure is the British royal family.
