Yoel Romero competed for the UFC middleweight title. Now, he is chasing another gold.

And it is coming at both a new weight class and in a new promotion.

Romero will embark on that quest beginning Saturday at Bellator 266 when he faces off against Phil Davis. The event takes place live on Showtime from the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

During his incredible career in the UFC after winning an Olympic medal in wrestling, Romero fought for the middleweight belt.

He has since decided to leave behind some of the weight-cutting struggles of his past for the 205-pound division.

“I feel good because I didn’t have to drop weight. I just kept my own weight,” Romero said. “I just switched divisions and kept my own weight. And I’ve always trained with heavyweights and light heavyweights within my training camp. I’m completely adapted to the heavier weights.”

Romero added that he is thrilled to be fighting for Bellator now following his extended run in the UFC.

“I’m so excited because I’m doing the one thing that I love so much and to do it for this company Bellator is even more exciting,” he said.

After coming into mixed martial arts as a wrestler, Romero has continued to improve upon his skills. With the extended break between fights, that has not changed.

“Fans are going to be able to see my growth within mixed martial arts and that I’m always in great physical form,” Romero said. “The experience that I’ve had so far with Bellator has been nothing but fantastic and I’m looking forward to taking part in this upcoming match.”
