Cyril Gane

In terms of name value, Derrick Lewis and Cyril Gane might not quite be on the same level of UFC heavyweights.

But that doesn’t mean the UFC 265 main event is short on big-time expectations.

Lewis and Gane will collide this Saturday night for the interim UFC heavyweight title. Francis Ngannou is the current division champion, and a possible unification match could be on the line for later in 2021.

But for now, we focus on Lewis vs. Gane. Not Ngannou vs. the winner. Or Ngannou vs. Jon Jones.

Lewis, a 36-year-old from Louisiana, has reeled off four consecutive victories. In February, he finished Curtis Blaydes in the second round, improving to 25-7 overall.

Since back-to-back losses to Junior dos Santos and Daniel Cormier in 2018 and 2019, Lewis has been unstable. Of his three most recent defeats, two have come to former champions in dos Santos and Cormier, and the other to former title contender Mark Hunt.

As for Gane, in nine pro fights, he has yet to taste defeat. That includes a 2020 finish of dos Santos and six wins inside the Octagon.

If you have yet to see Gane compete, make sure to check out some of the fight replay offerings available out there. He is a force.

But so is Lewis.

This has all the making of an epic mega-fight between two heavyweight fighters.
