The ninth and final season of Tim Allen’s beloved sitcom “Last Man Standing” premiered on Sunday in a moment that was bittersweet for fans who have loved the show for years. America’s favorite family man, who also reprises his “Home Improvement” character in season 9, gave a candid interview that gives his fans a glimpse of the big emotions behind the scenes.
In the days before the season 9 premiere of “Last Man Standing”, Allen gave a candid interview in which he opened up about why filming the last season of the show was such a difficult experience for him.
Allen, 67, told Fox News that it was “horrible” filming the final season because the entire cast knew that each day they worked was bringing them closer to the end of the show.
“I thought it would be a good idea,” Allen said. “It was a terrible idea!”
“I feel like because we show up to work going ahhhhh (“crying”) I can’t…” Allen’s co-star and onscreen wife Nancy Travis added with a laugh.
Despite tears, Travis assured fans that they will find the final season to be just as funny as ever.
“Just the everyday things that you ponder and wonder about…. the girls are grown now and they come in and out of our lives and we have grandchildren,” Travis said of what the final season will focus on.

A highlight of filming this season came when Allen got to reprise his “Home Improvement” character Tim “The Toolman” Taylor for one episode in which The Toolman meets his “Last Man Standing” character Mike Baxter.
“It was really confusing for me to play Tim Taylor, who, I think of Mike Baxter is an evolution of that character. He’s smarter, went to college,” Allen described. “We don’t know whether Tim Taylor was really stupid or really smart. I mean, I played the guy I wasn’t sure.”
However, Tim Allen admitted to Entertainment Tonight that the experience of reprising this character was more “emotional” than he anticipated.
“It was very peculiar to do both parts, I’ll tell you that. It was challenging for me to do both parts and kind of emotional,” Allen said, going on to explain this was because of the 2003 death of Earl Hindman, who played Allen’s onscreen neighbor Wilson in “Home Improvement.”
“I adored the man and we kind of brought that up in the story,” Allen said. “I started thinking about all the history I had with that TV show, how I compare it to my life on this show. It’s all about loss, is all I kept saying in that episode.”
It’s no surprise there were “horrible” and “emotional” moments when it came to filming this final season of “Last Man Standing”.
Clearly Tim Allen and the rest of the show’s cast and crew put their hearts and souls into making this the best season they could.
