Jennifer Maia had a few, memorable moments against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 255. But, the flyweight champ’s well-rounded game proved to be too much for the challenger.
Shevchenko came out firing kicks and then took Maia down not long in. Shevchenko worked from within Maia’s guard and she tossed in the occasional shot from above. Shevchenko continued to work from within Maia’s guard with no effort to pass.
Maia came out pressuring and Shevchenko countered with a takedown. Maia, however, quickly popped right back up and a clinch battle ensued. After a prolonged battle along the cage, Maia took Shevchenko to the floor. Maia worked from the top position for much of the round’s final minutes.
Shevchenko planted a nice left moments into the round. Maia clinched up and pushed Shevchenko to the cage. Shevchenko broke free, however, and fired off strikes. Shevchenko scored with a big left moments in. The champ stayed busy with her hands. Moments later, Shevchenko took Maia down to the floor again. Shevchenko worked from the top for quite a while and Maia, temporarily gave up her back. Shevchenko finished the round working from the top.
Maia came out pressuring and pushed Shevchenko to the fence. Shevchenko reversed the position and planted an elbow, before breaking free. Shevchenko flurried in but Maia countered and clinched up. Maia tried taking Shevchenko down but the champ defended. Shevchenko stayed busy with strikes. Maia continued to fire back, but Shevchenko appeared to be landing more often.
Determined effort by Maia, but Shevchenko should defend. Shevchenko was awarded the decision win by all three judges.
