Deiveson Figueiredo

Deiveson Figueiredo has had quite the year already, but it looks like the UFC’s flyweight champ is going to get one more bout in before 2020 wraps up. Yes, although both Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno fought last night, it’s being reported the two have agreed to throw hands at UFC 256.

Figueiredo and Moreno have agreed to make history

If you watched UFC 255 last night, you know that both Figueiredo and Moreno scored quick wins. The champ Figueiredo subbed Alex Perez with a first-round, guillotine choke.

Moreno, meanwhile, scored an opening round, TKO win over Brandon Royval.

Well, during the post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that the UFC was hoping to book Figueiredo for a quick, turn-around fight (quote via MMA Junkie).

“We’re going to keep (Figueiredo) here,” White said. “He’s not going back to Brazil. We’re going to turn him right around (in) December. That’s what we’re working on.”

ESPN proceeded to report that both men have verbally agreed to fight on December 12th, at UFC 256. If the fight happens, it will set a record for the quickest title fight turnaround for a champion and challenger: 21 days.

Many thought the promotion might look to bolster the line-up for UFC 256, which recently lost a title fight between Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson. Nunes is injured.

That left a fight between bantamweight champ Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling as the headliner. RT Sport is reporting, however, that the bout’s been postponed since Yan’s been forced to withdraw.

Figueiredo vows to “destroy” Moreno

All that aside, it certainly sounds like there’s some tension between Figueiredo and Moreno. While talking to the press afterward, Figueiredo reportedly fired this verbal warning at the contender (quote via MMA Junkie).

“I think I’m going to destroy him. I think I’m going to break him just as much, because Brandon Moreno talk a lot of bad things,” Figueiredo said through interpreter Wallid Ismail.

“(He has) a personal problem with Brandon Moreno. I’m going to destroy Brandon Moreno. But the boss shows the desire to see this fight.”

“…I’m very patient,” he said. “I know this is my belt. I know I am going to be the champion for a long time.

I have no pressure at all. I come here to do what I told everyone I am going to do: (I’m) going to submit in the first round.”

If Figueiredo defeats Moreno, then he will have gone 4-0 this year. In February, Figueiredo stopped Joseph Benavidez, before he went to choke him out in their July rematch.

So, in other words, a victory at UFC 256 will deliver the champ a strong case for ‘fighter of the year’.
