Original ‘Home Alone’ Director Chris Columbus Claims Disney+ Reboot Is “A Waste of Time”

Original 'Home Alone' director Chris Columbus recently offered his opinion that the upcoming reboot is “a waste of time”.

Chris Columbus, the director behind the first-two Home Alone films, recently offered his opinion that the upcoming reboot of the 1990s Macaulay Culkin-led comedy series is “a waste of time”, and even questioned why it was being produced in the first place.

The critically acclaimed director, whose directorial credits in addition to the Home Alone duology include Mrs. Doubftire and the first two Harry Potter films, recently spoke on the subject of the series revival in an interview Insider.

When asked by the outlet if he was involved with the new Home Alone series slated for Disney+, Columbus revealed that “nobody got in touch with me about it” and considered the project to be “a waste of time as far as I’m concerned.”

“What’s the point?” Columbus asked rhetorically. “I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of ‘Home Alone.’ You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it?”

Columbus would then compare the undertaking of a reboot to ”doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film”, further asking “What’s the point” and insisting that creators “do your own thing”, as  “even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.”

However,  Columbus was more than aware of the irony of his statement, noting how he himself could be accused of ‘painting-by-the-numbers’ in his production of Home Alone 2, as “that movie is basically a remake of the first ‘Home Alone’.”

“Does it need to exist?” questioned Columbus, before humorously asserting “Yes, because some of those stunts make me laugh really hard, but I just don’t believe it should be done.

Columbus exasperation reached its limit when the conversation turned to the topic of the upcoming Ryan Reynolds stoner-based-Home-Alone-parody Stoned Alone, which prompted the director comment that “God only knows what that will be”.

“Listen, have fun,” asked Columbus of his audience at the end of their discussion on the upcoming Disney+ remake. “I just feel, do something new. Life is short.”
