Paulo Costa Calls For “Amazing Fight” With Robert Whittaker

Robert Whittaker made sure at UFC 254 that he remains in the title shot mix. But it looks like Paulo Costa is hoping to trash any short term plan for Israel Adesanya – Whittaker 2.

As you either watched and or have heard, Whittaker spoiled any plans for an Adesanya – Jared Cannonier fight this past weekend, but handing the powerful middleweight a decision loss. After Adesanya took out Costa last month at UFC 253, the champ said he planned to face Cannonier next, if…he beat Whittaker.

Well, following Whittaker’s win over Cannonier, Costa tweeted out this.

Hey Robert Whittaker enjoy your end of year, you deserved. When you come back we can do amazing fight

And, he also fired this tweet as well.

I’m just curious to know Adesanya next step . Is he still Jones scared?

Whittaker – Costa?

Now, there’s likely a lot of people that would like to see Costa and Whittaker fight, and for good reason. But, as it stands right now, this match-up seems kind of unlikely.

Following UF 254, Dana White said a rematch between Adesanya and Whittaker makes sense. If there were other contenders knocking on the title shot door right now, the promotion might be looking elsewhere (as Whittaker was stopped by Adesanya last October).

But, there really isn’t another, obvious contender for Adesanya right now, aside from the former champ.

Now, if Adesanya changes his proposed timeline for a bout with Jones, as Costa alluded to, then maybe the UFC would look at Whittaker – Costa.

Would the former champ be interested though? On one hand, Whittaker has said he’s not going to demand that Adesanya fight him next.

But, he’s also made it clear he wants to run it back with the champ.
