Jon Jones Lights up Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Move Into #1 P4P Spot

Days removed from arguably his most impressive win to date, Khabib Nurmagomedov has been moved into the number one spot of the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings. If you’ve been following Jon Jones since Khabib choked out Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, you won’t be surprised to hear that Jones is blasting the move.

Jones trashes Khabib’s #1 P4P ranking

After Khabib finished Gaethje at UFC 254, the lightweight king called on the media panel who determines the UFC’s ranks to move him into the #1, P4P spot. Well, recently the new rankings were rolled out, and Khabib has indeed, replaced Jones in the #1 slot.

Since UFC 254 went down, and Khabib retired, there’s been a lot of folks referring to Nurmagomedov as the greatest of all time. That hasn’t sat well with Jones, who has been insisting his resume surpasses Khabib’s.

Well, ‘Bones’ clearly doesn’t agree with the new rankings either, as following their release, he tweeted out this (warning: graphic language).

“This is number one bullsh-t”

“Unanimous decision over last minute replacement Al Iaquinta to become champion. Conor McGregor is the only opponent he’s ever had that the general public actually knew. Catapulted my man to becoming the best ever, this is hilarious”

Thoughts?

Even if you agree with Jones’ position regarding who is the GOAT – he maintains he is and not Khabib – you have to concede that his argument here is not as strong.

Determining who is the GOAT involves looking at a fighter’s entire resume, over time. Determining who is the best, pound-for-pound fighter, however, is based on the current situation.

In the case of Jones, we are talking about someone who narrowly got by Thiago Santos in 2019, despite the fact the latter trashed both of his knees. In Jones’ last fight, this past February, he barely got by Dominick Reyes.

In fact, many people scored the fight for the challenger.

Khabib, meanwhile, closed out his career with decisive, clear-cut wins over Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Three of the best lightweights of this generation.
