For a little while there, talk about Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya throwing hands at some juncture had all but dried up. But, following Adesanya’s big win at UFC 253, buzz about the stars fighting has spiked all over again.
In fact, it sounds like Dana White will do his part to make it happen.
Jones and Adesanya have been feuding for well over a year now, and as a result, there’s extensive talk about the two fighting at some point. After Adesanya defeated Anderson Silva in February of 2019, he relayed he planned to defeat another great, namely Jones.
That kicked off a pretty intense rivalry. But, when Jones announced he was vacating the light heavyweight belt and moving to heavyweight, talk about him fighting Adesanya died down.
That’s no longer the case, however, as after Adesanya defeated Paulo Costa at UFC 253, he repeated his desire to face “Bones”. The two have been trading verbal shots once again, so much so, the fight’s still on the UFC’s radar.
Case in point, recently White had this to say about Adesanya versus Jones while talking to UFC Arabia (quotes via MMA Mania).
“That’s the fight to make, 100 percent,” White said. “I think that a fight between those two is massive.”
“It doesn’t depend on what I want; it depends on what they want to do,” White added. “Adesanya is a champ.
He’s really coming into his own, and you can tell he knows this is his house, and he comes and acts like it.
I think he wants the winner of Whittaker and Cannonier, and then we’ll see what happens after that.”
Now, the fact White’s still interested in making this fight isn’t a surprise. Obviously it would be a massive, massive fight, as Adesanya and Jones are two of the biggest names in the game.
The question is, however, would Jones agree to fight Adesanya at light heavyweight, if “Bones” is not holding the belt?
Or might he ask to fight the new champ, Jan Blachowicz first? And then if he reclaims the 205 title, you would have a champ versus champ scenario with Jones versus Adesanya?
It’s worth noting that after Blachowicz took out Dominick Reyes at UFC 253 to win the light heavyweight crown, Jones teased returning to the division.
And what could all of this mean for Jones’ move to heavyweight? In terms of a timeline?
If Adesanya does plan to wait to see whether Jared Cannonier beats Robert Whittaker on October 24, and possibly fight him next, Jones – Adesanya probably wouldn’t happen until late spring, early summer.
So, in other words, a lot has to fall into place before this bout can happen.
