UFC president Dana White announced on SportsCenter that the promotion has added Michael Chandler to the active roster.
A former Bellator lightweight champion, Chandler will serve in a backup role for the upcoming UFC title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje. That fight is scheduled for October.
Chandler is 21-5 in his career and has fought for Bellator since 2010. He is a multi-time champion in the promotion. He owns wins over Eddie Alvarez, Benson Henderson and numerous others.
“Eventually, hard work pays off. You just have to still be standing there when it does,” Chandler told ESPN. “I’m humbled by the opportunity and can’t wait to go prove what I have been saying for the past 11 years; that I’m the best lightweight in the world. See you at the top!”
Nurmagomedov and Gaethje are scheduled for October 24 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. Gaethje is the interim champion.
