Stephen Thompson recently set a personal milestone (if that’s really possible via social media), by calling out Leon Edwards via Twitter. But, according to fast-rising star, Khamzat Chimaev, Thompson should leave Edwards alone since they’re supposedly fighting.

Chimaev says he’s fighting Thompson next

Thompson is hoping to return to the cage fairly soon, following his decision win over Vicente Luque last November. The highlight reel striker broke both of his hands in that fight and hasn’t fought since.

So, recently Thompson decided to call for a fight with the surging contender, Edwards. “Wonderboy” did so via tweet, marking the first time he’s called someone out on Twitter.

Well, clearly Chimaev was monitoring the situation, as he responded with this.

We fighting next lets go leave Leon alone

Could Thompson – Chimaev be on deck?

Now, if you’ve been following Chimaev, and his impressive rise, you know he’s been calling out a lot of folks. So, his tweet here doesn’t necessarily mean the UFC is looking at having him fight Thompson next.

But, Dana White has made it clear he wants to get Chimaev as many fights as possible.

Chimaev made news this past July, when he became the first fighter in UFC history to win two UFC bouts, in just 10 days.

The Chechen born, Swedish fighter faced John Phillips on July 15th and submitted the middleweight in round two. Then, just ten days later, Chimaev took on welterweight Rhys McKee and stopped him in the first round.

This past Saturday,  the 26-year-old put away Gerald Meerschaert with just one punch at the 17 second mark. The UFC was already, reportedly working on having Chimaev fight longtime, welterweight contender Demian Maia next month on Fight Island.

But, could the UFC be looking at having him fight before then? Or is the promotion changing gears?

Or, is Chimaev just hoping to fight Thompson in the near future? It would be kind of surprising if Thompson agreed to face someone who has yet to beat a top-ten ranked welterweight.

Given that Thompson has been at the top of the division for years. But, you never know.

Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
