Due some sort of leg issue Sean O’Malley incurred, prior to being stopped by Marlon Vera, some fans have called for a rematch between the bantamweights. Further, some have questioned how the fight was stopped.

But, it seems pretty clear that “Chito” isn’t interested in granting “Sugar” another bout, anytime soon.

Vera says O’Malley needs to “prove himself”

The Ecuadorian fighter faced O’Malley at UFC 252, in fight that was seen as a platform to build the American up even more.  After all, the bout was the card’s co-headliner, and the UFC’s promotional materials heaped praise on the then, undefeated O’Malley.

Well, as you very likely know, things went of the rails for O’Malley early on, as he incurred some sort of injury or issue with his leg. Not long after, Vera finished the fight with a couple of hard elbows from above.

After the bout, replays showed that Vera had tagged O’Malley with some hard leg kicks, which could have led to his leg issues. In response to the notion the fight was stopped to early, Vera insisted O’Malley was out.

More recently, however, Vera spoke with BJ Penn.com. While talking about the fight’s outcome, Vera said this.

“Now that the fight is over, he didn’t hurt his ankle. The x-rays came back clean,” Vera said. “What I did to him, is basically when someone punches you in the jaw you go out.

His legs went out. I don’t give a f**k what people think or say.

There will always be haters. He went out.

But, man if they don’t stop it I would’ve beat him worse in the second. Everyone has an opinion. It was a solid win and I am happy, I wouldn’t change anything.”

“I am going to be honest, he quit,” Vera said. “But, at the end of the day, I know my kicks are powerful and it f****d up his leg. His nerve went away when I kicked him.”

And in regards to the ideea of facing O’Malley again, the rugged fighter was quick to scoff at the proposal

“F**k no, f**k him. He has to go fight and prove himself,” Vera said. “Let’s be real he was fighting low-level competition.”

Reaction?

Now, even if you’re a big O’Malley fan, and think he’d beat Vera 4 times out of 5, you have to admit that Vera deserves credit for this victory.

As far as a rematch, it would be kind of surprising if the UFC went this route. If O’Malley were to drop back-to-back bouts to Vera, it would be a significant hit to his rising stardom.

So who does Vera want to fight next?

“I want Jimmie Rivera next and that is what will happen next. There is nowhere he can run now or any excuses he can make,” he said.

“Right now, he has his back against his wall and can’t be picking his opponents. We have been scheduled to fight a couple of times, that is the fight to make.”

Sounds like a plan no?
