Deiveson Figuiredo

Deiveson Figueiredo needed less than one round to claim the UFC’s flyweight title tonight, as the Brazilian cruised through Joseph Benavidez in the UFC Fight Island 2 headliner.

Round one

Figueiredo came out pressuring and Benavidez looked to counter with kicks. Not long in, Figueiredo sent Benavidez to the deck with a huge right. Figueiredo followed up with shots from above and then wrapped up a rear-naked-choke. Wow. Benavidez managed to escape. Seconds later, Figueiredo secured an even tighter looking choke, but a grimacing Benavidez worked his way out again.Unbelievable.

The fight returned to its feet and Benavidez scored with a couple of punches. Later in the round, Figueiredo momentarily put Benavidez down with another big right. Benavidez planted some shots not long after, but in the final minute, Figueiredo sent him down again.

Figueiredo bloodied Benavidez with strikes from above and then secured another rear-naked-choke. This time, however, Benavidez couldn’t escape and he went out. What a performance by the new flyweight champ.

Figueiredo also stopped Benavidez in their February bout, but an accidental headbutt prior to the fight’s final flurry clouded the result. Since Figueiredo missed weight for that fight, he was ineligible to win the title.
