Thor’s Natalie Portman & Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix And Others Push Petition That Calls For The End Of “Police Terror”

Hollywood’s elite is again throwing their political weight behind another petition [1] in order to end what the author calls “Police Terror”.

Promoted by Will & Grace’s Debra Messing, the petition has attracted many A-list actors and actresses such as the Joker’s Joquin Phoenix and Thor Love and Thunder’s Natalie Portman; with many others throwing their support behind the petition such as Chloe Moretz, Sophia Bush, Rooney Mara, JoJo, America Ferrera and singer John Legend.

In the petition, it begins by claiming a demand for the divestment, from Police and an Investment in Black Communities”. The letter goes on to claim that law enforcement and other “state actors” are agents of terror within the black community as well as to claim that due to the police they “embolden” vigilantes to kill black people.

The petition goes on to read in part, “Black communities are living in persistent fear of being killed by state authorities like police, immigration agents or even white vigilantes who are emboldened by state actors.”

It next goes on to be critical of the increase in law enforcement budgets over the last few decades, “According to the Urban Institute, in 1977, state and local governments spent $60 billion on police and corrections. In 2017, they spent $194 billion. A 220 percent increase. Despite continued profiling, harassment, terror and killing of Black communities, local and federal decision-makers continue to invest in the police, which leaves Black people vulnerable and our communities no safer.”

The petition goes on to list three demands for local officials. In the “Pledge” they demand that local governments first do not increase budgets for law enforcement. Second, they want them to instead reduce their budgets. Third, take the money and redirect it to, “health care, education, and community programs”.

This isn’t the first time celebrities have thrown their weight behind the concept of defunding the police. Earlier this summer her and Captian Marvel star Brie Larson signed an open letter calling for the defending of police departments [4].

Pheonix for his part has also been active politically this year. He and many other celebrities called for a “Radical Transformation” of Society after the Covid-19 crisis in order to address climate change [6].
