Pedro Munhoz-Frankie Edgar Off Due To COVID-19

Pedro Munhoz has tested positive for the coronavirus, scratching his planned fight with Frankie Edgar.

Munhoz and Edgar were set to compete next Wednesday on the second UFC “Fight Island” show from Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The bout would have been the co-main event for the card.

It remains unknown at this time if the promotion will find a replacement on short notice to keep Edgar on the card.

Munhoz dropped a 2019 decision to Aljamain Sterling to fall to 18-4 overall with a no-contest. He is 7-2 over his last nine bouts, though, including wins vs. former champion Cody Garbrandt. 

Edgar, an ex-UFC lightweight champion, attempted to make a run at featherweight. He suffered losses to former champion Max Holloway and Chan Sung Jung, promoting the move to bantamweight. 

Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige are set to headline the UFC Fight Night event in Abu Dhabi. 

MMA Fusion was first to report Munhoz’s exit. 

Cody Stamann took note of the news and offered his services. 

“I fought on 2 weeks notice and had one of the best performances of my life,” he wrote. “I’ll travel around the world tomorrow and fight one of the best to ever do it (Edgar) if that’s what the UFC wants. 

“Send the contract, then the jet. I’m in.”
