Tyson to face Jones Jr. in an exhibition match

Recently the 54-year-old legend said he was exploring the possibility of returning to the ring for an exhibition match. Now it’s been announced that Tyson is going to box the 51-year-old Jones Jr. September 12th, in an eight-round, exhibition fight.

The pay-per-view fight will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, but without fans in attendance, on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’re wondering what exactly an exhibition fight entails, well, California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster reportedly told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani the following:

“Confirmed with CSAC’s Andy Foster that Mike Tyson will fight Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition bout on 9/12 in Cali. No fans in attendance, he said. No headgear. “Larger gloves,” but “they‘re still working that out. Maybe 12 (ounces),” he said. First reported by

“It’s an exhibition bout. Not a ‘try to use your best efforts’ type bout,” Foster said.

Tyson is 54 and hasn’t fought since 2005. Jones Jr. is 51 and last fought in 2018.

First fight for Tyson since 2005

The feared slugger Tyson (50-6-2) hasn’t competed since 2005, when he lost to Kevin McBride. The defeat was his second straight.

Although Jones Jr. (66-9) is also far removed from his prime years, the legend fought as recently as 2018, when he scored a decision win over Scott Sigmon. The decorated fighter has won four straight.

So, it’s going to be really interesting to see what kind of numbers this PPV does.
