Maurice Greene is known for his striking skills, but tonight the heavyweight dropped jaws throughout MMA, by subbing Gian Villante with a choke from the bottom.

Round one

Greene came out and stayed busy with kicks. Villante continued to press forward in search of landing a big shot. Greene landed a few more leg kicks and also fired in more front kicks. Villante took a kick low and the fight was momentarily stopped.

Villante started tossing some kicks of his own while Greene continued to fight at range, using kicks to keep his distance. Mid-round, Greene bombed in a headkick that Villante blocked.

Villante scored with a kick to the body which appeared to hurt Greene. The latter recovered, and both heavyweights stayed busy until the end of the frame.

Round two

In between rounds, Villante apparently could be heard he thinks he broke his toe. Both men continued to mix in kicks and punches. Villante just missed with a huge right around a minute in. Villante scored with a thumping leg kick mid-round and then he did so again, moments later.

Greene stayed busy with his jab and started to check the leg kick attempts from Villante. Later in the frame, Villante grazed Greene with a headkick. Greene ate a left hook late in the frame, and took another leg kick as well.

Round three

Greene changed levels moments into the round but Villante defended. The fighters started to crank up the volume but Villante took an accidental eye poke. Moments after the fight resume, Villante sent Greene to the deck with a massive left.

Villante poured down elbows and punches from above but Greene finally managed to tie the former light heavyweight up. As Villante worked from the top, Greene locked up a arm-triangle-choke from the bottom, and forced the tap. Villante’s fatigue likely played a big factor in the submission. Shocking, shocking turn of events.
