Josh Emmett continued to climb the featherweight ranks at UFC Vegas 3 tonight, by getting by fellow contender Shane Burgos in a fight of a year candidate.
Burgos came out pressuring while Emmett looked to counter with blitzes. Emmett fired in a massive right that grazed Burgos. Both featherweights winged big punches and stiff jabs. Burgo just missed with a knee to the head. Emmett tagged Burgos with a right but the latter just smiled and proceeded to score with a couple of calf kicks. Burgos dug to the body of Emmett with a hard left hook. In the final minute, Emmett stormed in looking for a takedown, but Burgos defended.
Replay between rounds indicated Emmett may have injured his knee in the opening frame.
Burgos continued to stay busy with leg kicks early on into round two, and Emmett continued to fire back heavy punches. Burgos fired in more jabs as well as kicks, and Emmett’s knee looks like it’s bothering him. Emmett came with a hard 1-2 but Burgos continued to throw more often. Burgos planted a nice right la te in the frame, and Emmett returned fire moments later.
Both featherweights continued to fire heavy punches early into round five. Not long in, however, Emmett sent Burgos to the floor with a stinging punch. Emmett started working from the top in the guard of Burgos, but the latter quickly got back to his feet. A couple of minutes in Emmett took a low blow and the action was temporarily halted.
The fight resumed, and both featherweights continued to fire huge shots. Moments later, Emmett sent Burgos back to the deck with a huge left. Emmett scored with a few punches from above but Burgos jumped back to his feet. Burgos planted a couple of hard jabs, and stepped up his attacks. Burgos ate another huge shot inf the final minute but still pressed forward. The final horn went as yet another exchange occurred. What a fight.
Emmett receives the nod from all three judges. During his post-fight interview, Emmett relayed he may have torn his ACL.
