MMA fans had to go without fights for multiple weeks. But now that the UFC is up-and-running again, the promotion’s been busy booking bouts for its summer schedule, and one of the latest is Dustin Poirier vs. Dan Hooker.

Poirier – Hooker to headline June 27th card

The UFC was hoping to have the lightweights battle earlier this year, before the COVID-19 pandemic punted those plans. On Friday, however, it was announced that Poirier – Hooker will be the main event for the UFC’s June 27th card at the Apex Facility in Vegas.

While discussing the bout with ESPN, UFC President Dana White said this (quote via MMA Junkie).

“This is an important fight for both guys,” White said. “Obviously Poirier wants to get a shot at that title.

And if Hooker comes in and beats Poirier, he (will have) finally arrived. He (will be) one of the top five guys in the world and on his way to a title fight.”

Yup. Hard to disagree (although for the record, Hooker is already ranked #5 in the UFC’s 155 division). Poirier (25-6, 1 NC) is looking to get back on track, as he hasn’t fought since he was submitted by the champ Khabib Nurmagomedov in September. Prior to the loss, the American had won four in a row.

Hooker (20-8), meanwhile, outscored Paul Felder for a split decision win in February, in what was an absolute war. The New Zealand fighter has won three straight.

This is a fight that should be marked on any big-time fan’s must-see list.
