Henry Cejudo

A lot of people, in fact, it seems like the majority of folks, believe we’ll see Henry Cejudo throwing hands in the Octagon again. But, bantamweight contender Pedro Munhoz thinks “Triple C’s” fighting days are indeed, over for good.

Munhoz believes Cejudo is done

After Cejudo defended the bantamweight title at UFC 249 last month, by stopping Dominick Cruz, he announced he’s walking away from fighting.

Cejudo said he’s happy with what he’s accomplished in his career, and the former Olympic Gold Medal wrestler relayed he wants to leave on top.

Immediately, however, Cejudo’s announcement was met with skepticism. A lot of people questioned whether Cejudo was just saying he’s retiring as a bargaining tactic for more money.

Others opined that since Cejudo is only 33, he’ll be back. Even his manager relayed he thinks the former champ-champ will fight again, and soon.

But, according to Munhoz, he doesn’t see that happening. While talking to MMA Junkie recently, Munhoz said this.

“I don’t think he’s coming back,” Munhoz said. “He made a decision, you know, and if you’re able to retire with two belts – flyweight and bantamweight – it was definitely a big accomplishment besides being an Olympic world champion.

“So to each his own, but I think he made the right decision to retire with two titles, champion in two divisions, plus all the title and being an Olympic champion.

I think he made the right decision, but now it’s our time to fight and see who fights for the title.”

We’ll see what happens, although, Cejudo has already said that a fight with featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski would get him back in the cage. Cejudo has also been pushing for a boxing match with Ryan Garcia.

So, while those match-ups may not happen, it seems clear Cejudo is still thinking about fighting on some level.

Title shot picture has opened up

For now, however, there’s no question that Cejudo’s departure has opened things up in the bantamweight division. Case in point, Munhoz had this to say as well.

“I think right now, with the fact that he retired, things opened up even though I think some of the stuff was not fair regarding the (vacant) title fight. I still believe that the right fight to do was Petr (Yan) and Aljamain (Sterling), so we’re going to see what’s going to happen.”

Yan is currently booked to fight Jose Aldo on July 11th for the vacant, bantamweight title. Munhoz, meanwhile, will face Frankie Edgar that same night in the latter’s debut at 135 pounds.
