Kamaru Usman

Recently Kamaru Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz took a poke at Conor McGregor on Twitter, while proposing a fight between the welterweight champ and the star. But, as it turns out, Usman’s team is apparently calling for a fight with McGregor, if Jorge Masvidal isn’t stepping up.

Abdelaziz repeats call for Usman – McGregor fight

All this got going over the weekend, after McGregor tweeted out that he believes he’s closing in on being the greatest fighter of all time. Various fighters fired back at McGregor, including Nate Diaz, who argued he’s in fact, the pound-for-pound GOAT.

Well, that prompted Masvidal to remind Diaz that he defeated him via TKO last November. “Gamebred” also offered Diaz a chance to “run it back.”

Following those comments from Masvidal, Abdelaziz directed this at McGregor.

“It looks like #1 contender wants to fight Nate Diaz now . Good for him @TheNotoriousMMA hey you want a title shot? Come to daddy @USMAN84kg will give you one and he promise first 2 rounds without takedowns only slaps Face with tears of joy“

Now, one might have thought Abdelaziz was just joking around, thus, the comments about takedowns and slaps. But, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto is also reporting that Abdelaziz has confirmed that if Masvidal wants to fight Diaz next, they’re interested in the Usman – McGregor bout.

Could this happen?

So, there are a couple of things to look at here. First off, just because Masvidal has reported interest in fighting Diaz again, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s thinking of doing that instead of fighting Usman.

It would be kind of a big turnaround for Masvidal, as he hasn’t really talked about fighting Diaz again for awhile. Plus, in recent months Masvidal has been feuding with Usman, big time, and he did seem pretty focused on fighting the champ.

But, if McGregor decides he wants to take a run at winning a third UFC championship, and the promotion offers him the fight, it could happen. Especially since it doesn’t look like McGregor will be fighting for the lightweight title anytime soon.

The other  interesting piece to this is Abdelaziz’s call to give McGregor a title shot, even thought the former champ hasn’t really recorded any pivotal wins at welterweight.

Abdelaziz might argue that Usman has already defeated top contenders in Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington, so if Masvidal doesn’t want the shot, then why not Conor?

But, fighters like Leon Edwards would likely fiercely object to handing McGregor a title shot at this point.
