Khabib Nurmagomedov

Depending on how things play out this Saturday at UFC 249, and with the coronavirus pandemic, the UFC’s summer schedule could feature Khabib Nurmagomedov after all.

Nurmagmedov says he’ll be ready to “smash” in July

Ever since Khabib was stranded in Russia due to the coronavirus pandemic, and was forced to withdraw from his bout with Tony Ferguson (again), the consensus was his next fight will be after summer. Dana White has mentioned September while talking about Khabib’s next fight, and the champ has also referenced that month.

But, while responding to an ESPN Instagram post, recently Khabib shared out this (quote via MMA Junkie).

“I can fight anytime, Ramadan finishes May 23,” Nurmagomedov wrote on Instagram. “July I’m gonna be ready. Stop talking about me, this is coronatime, when Khabibtime comes I smash all of them.”

Will we see the champ back in July?

So, you know the UFC would love to have Khabib fight sooner than later. But, it all depends on how Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje unfolds, and whether they emerge relatively healthy from the fight. Of course, if there’s still travel bans in place due to the pandemic, then getting the champ to the fight could be problematic.

Ferguson and Gaethje are fighting for an interim lightweight title this Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida.
