Robin Williams

The late legendary comedian Robin Williams sadly never got to meet his one-year-old grandson, but that doesn’t mean the little boy isn’t developing a relationship with his grandfather through the incredible body of work he left behind.

Robin Williams’ Grandson Is Introduced To His Movies

Williams was one of the most beloved actors and comedians in the world before he tragically committed suicide in 2014. He was 63.

His son Zak is keeping his father’s memory alive in his family by slowly introducing his movies to his one-year-old son McLaurin Clement, who goes by Mickey. McLaurin was Robin Williams’ middle name.

Williams acted in more than 60 movies, so there are a lot to go through. I’m sure Mickey’s parents will show him the movies that are appropriate for his age as he grows.

Specifically, the little boy is already obsessed with one of Williams’ most popular movies: Aladdin.

“His mom [Olivia June] and I have certainly considered how we want to introduce my son’s grandfather, my dad, into his life,” Zak told People magazine.

“Certainly through his movies and the cartoons that he participated in is a great way. My son, Mickey, points at a cel that we have in his room of my dad that has the genie from ‘Aladdin.’”

Cels are transparent sheets of celluloid that are used in animation, and Mickey’s parents have used them to decorate his bedroom with different characters that Williams played.

“He’s got a collection of photos and animation cels throughout our home that he sees on a daily basis,” Zak explained. “I think it’s being mindful and introducing the elements and stories about him slowly.”

Zak Wants His Son To Learn Williams’ Values

Zak added that he and his wife both feel that it’s important to introduce aspects of Williams to their son so he can learn the values the late celebrity would have taught him, were he alive today.

“We hope that we can celebrate the positive elements and his works and films in a way that there can be appreciation and acknowledgment of him both as an entertainer, but also as a family man, and parent and grandfather to my son,” Zak said. “So, the key thing would be for us to introduce it slowly and meaningfully. Taking an opportunity to share stories and his values in a way that we hope can be appreciated and embodied.”

Zak Discusses What Being Williams’ Son Was Like

Since Williams’ death, Zak has devoted himself to being a mental health advocate. He currently sits on the Advisory Board of the mental health program Inseparable. He’s also been open about what it was like having Williams for a father.

“Being Robin Williams’ son was wonderful in so many ways [but] having to share him with the world was hard at times,” he told “Good Morning Britain” in July. “When he was having challenges and going through certain things, it was heartbreaking, because he still went out and wanted to share his feelings of laughter and humor with the world.”

“And, while he was suffering and struggling, he still went out and performed,” Zak added. “I admire him and loved him. […] For the most part, he was very good at putting his personal struggles aside and soldiering on. When it did show through, it was sad to see someone who was suffering so.”
