It remains to be seen when and who Conor McGregor will fight next. But, recently Eddie Alvarez weighed-in on who he wants to see his former opponent face, and it sounds like he’s not too interested in seeing McGregor rematch Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Alvarez believes McGregor would beat both Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje

Ever since McGregor ran through Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January, there’s been widespread talk about who he’ll fight next. For a while there, there was buzz about McGregor facing Gaethje, since Nurmagomedov and Ferguso were supposed to fight on April 18th.

But, due to the various restrictions the coronavirus pandemic has brought, UFC 249 was shifted to May 9th and Gaethje will face Ferguson for an interim lightweight title. Well, recently Alvarez spoke with The Score MMA and when asked what he’d like to see next for McGregor, the former UFC and Bellator champ said this.

“I think Conor would put Tony away. I’d like to see him fight Gaethje, but I’m of the belief that he beats Gaethje, but I would like to see the fight. I’d still like to see it.

I don’t know. Probably boxing. I’d like to see him box.”

Alvarez isn’t the first person to opine that McGregor would beat Ferguson and Gaethje. While both men are ridiculously dangerous, both fighters are known as pressuring fighters and both have been known to get hit.

So, some believe that would likely result in McGregor landing his booming left and scoring the win. That said, you have to wonder if either Gaethje or Ferguson would mix in some takedown attempts in an effort to change that dynamic.

Alvarez doesn’t see McGregor beating Khabib

Speaking of takedowns, Alvarez also had this to say about McGregor’s chances against Nurmagomedov in a rematch. Nurmagomedov battled McGregor in 2018 and as many expected, his wrestling and top game delivered the submission win.

“I’d probably be more interested in seeing him box than seeing him fight Khabib again. I don’t like the style matchup for him with Khabib.

I don’t think he has enough experience in that realm to overcome Khabib at any point, and I like watching him box.”

“He did a lot better with Mayweather than I thought he would do. I’d like to see him get in there with, no so much a Mayweather, but maybe like a C level guy.

I feel like he can win against a B or C level guy. Not like a frickin, best of all time.”

Ya. While McGregor has insisted a rematch with Khabib would go differently, others have also questioned whether the Irish star has had enough time to make up for the wrestling deficit. Even if McGregor’s camp was impacted by some sort of foot injury.

And as far as boxing, last year McGregor said he hopes to compete in multiple boxing matches before his career is up.

McGregor faced Alvarez back in 2016 and ended his reign as the lightweight champ by stopping him in round two.
