Nic Brown almost died from COVID-19. A ventilator helped him breathe when he couldn’t do it on his own.

While others might be asking “Why me?” Brown did not. He credits the near-death experience with strengthening his faith as he saw God demonstrating his love through the people who were caring for him in the hospital.

Symptoms Seemed Like Flu

The rural Ohio man had no idea how he contracted coronavirus. He thought he had the flu when his symptoms began with a headache and fever.

“I assumed I just had a flu,” said the father of three.

As his health continued to decline, he landed in the Intensive Care Unit of the Cleveland Clinic. His was the first case of coronavirus in his county and he had a very severe case.

Brown’s case was so severe the hospital contacted his wife to discuss end-of-life options for him. The 38-year-old man ended up on life support.

“He was receiving mechanical ventilation and he was deeply sedated at that time,” said Eduardo Mireles, M.D., director of the medical intensive care unit at Cleveland Clinic. “He was in the first stages of the severe illness from the COVID and we were trying to gauge how much lung injury he had and how he was responding to it.”

Messages Of Support On The Window

His medical staff wrote him notes of encouragement on the window of his ICU room that became his ‘window to the world.’

When he was well enough to be discharged, Brown repaid the favor by writing a message to them on that same window.

“This window has been the most impactful window in my life,” he wrote to his caregivers.”On days when I watched you work hard to keep me and others alive, unable to thank you for the time that you poured into me — and although I will probably never get the chance to pour that same love and support into you, I want you to know that I think you all are rockstars.”

Brown Credits His Caregivers

After Brown got settled at home, he gave an interview that highlights how the experience helped him see God’s love.

He credits prayer and the dedicated caregivers with saving his life. Even though he was gravely ill, he noticed the messages written to him on the window.

“Every day I was there, especially when I was on a ventilator and full life support, the staff would write on the window the goals for me to try and reach each day,” Brown said. “They would encourage me. One day someone wrote, ‘We will get you home.'”

Faith Made The Difference

“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen such selfless people in my life,” he said in the interview below. “I really saw the love of God through these people. I truly believe faith made the difference and the power of prayer and the people behind me just pouring over me the prayers that they were giving me.”

God works in mysterious ways and this medical crisis showed Nic Brown that God loves him.

God is always with us and sometimes his love comes shining through others, like the nurses who cared for Brown.
