UFC Newark Covington

Many people have argued that Colby Covington’s brash and at times controversial comments are tied to an act, which he’s used to become one of the more polarizing fighters in all of MMA. Well, whether that’s the case or not, recently Covington relayed he has his sights set on the professional wrestling world.

Covington wants to “make wrestling real again”

In the last couple of years, Covington has gone from being a relatively unknown fighter on the UFC roster to being one of the promotion’s top welterweights and most controversial figures.

While the accomplished wrestler has made headlines by verbally trashing various fighters in the industry, he’s also drawn fire for making derogatory and inappropriate statements. For example, Covington referred to  Brazilian fans as  “filthy animals” and the daughters of the late Glenn Robinson released a statement denouncing comments Covington made, about their father’s passing.

So, in other words, Covington is used to be regarded as a heel, which is a role pro-wrestling fans are well aware of. This could be one of the reasons Covington recently had this to say, while appearing on the “What the Heck Show” (comments via MMA Fighting).

“Those guys are true sports athlete entertainers,” Covington said. “To put on a show like that for the world while everybody’s at home watching, you don’t have the same energy from the crowd and the same adrenaline that you get when you walk into a full arena, so to see those guys out there putting it all on the line, I respect those guys.

Those guys are some of the hardest workers on earth. I hope to join them someday. I’ve got a lot of love and respect for Vince McMahon and what he’s done for the business model of the WWE.

“My thing is I want to go to WWE and make wrestling real again. I want people to get behind it and think that it’s real.

You ain’t going off the top rope on me because I’ll take you out with a double leg, you ain’t gonna get up there. So I’m looking to go over to WWE and make wrestling real again in the near future.

Until then I’m gonna be retiring all the old fogeys over here in the UFC.”

Timeline for a move to the WWE?

And as far as a timeline for a move to the pro-wrestling ring? “Chaos” said this.

“I would say probably 2021,” Covington said. “Next summer, not this summer, but next summer.

I’ve been practicing moves and really working on my promo and mic skills and just control and slowing things down and understanding the art of wrestling. I want to make sure when I go there I make the biggest splash possible because I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time and I’m not here to make friends, I’m here to make money.

When I go over there I want to make Brink’s trucks loads of money.”

So, it will be interesting to see if this happens. If Covington is still under contract with the UFC next year, it’s hard to imagine that the promotion would let him do much more than just an appearance or two at a WWE event.

As far as MMA, Covington has been pushing for a rematch with Kamaru Usman, who finished him at UFC 245 in December.
